The GAME

The game of Roller Derby is played on a flat, oval track. Play is broken up into two 30-minute periods, and within those periods, into units of play called “Jams,” which last up to two minutes. There are 30 seconds between each Jam.

During a Jam, each team fields up to five Skaters. Four of these Skaters are called “Blockers” (together, the Blockers are called the “Pack”), and one is called a “Jammer.” The Jammer wears a helmet cover with a star on it.

Access and Inclusion

Entry: At the front of ALAC you’ll find ACROD bays that lead to a central paved walkway. It is 50 m from the main doors of ALAC which are electric sliding doors. From here, a carpeted indoor corridor leads you to the court area where the game will be held

We accept companion cards

Noise: Roller Derby is a noisy sport, there will be a PA system playing music, two MCs for the games as well as a lot of whistles and wheels screeching on the floors. If you use noise-cancelling devices like headphones or earbuds we advise bringing them along.

We do not have a dedicated ‘quiet space’ but the hallway where you enter can be used at any time for some quiet time, this has comfortable lounges and will be away from the loud game. You will not need a pass out, you can access this space any time you need.

Lighting: There will be no strobe lighting

Seating: There is accessible seating as you enter the track area to your left near the bar. There will be extra space around the seats. And the ability to move seats for those who use a wheelchair or other mobility aid.

ALAC is cold, and the seats are metal or plastic, so bring a rug or warm clothing to wear at the event.

We have bench seating, plastic chairs AND track-side floor seating. You can bring a bean bag, cushion or low chair to sit trackside (the best seats in our opinion)

Vision: There is a scoreboard that shows the points, time, and lead jammer status. Please check our this link for the videos of how the game is played, points scoring, and penalties.

Parking: There are two main car parks at ALAC with free parking that is well-lit at night. There are limited taxis. there are no Buses.

First Aid: 2 St Johns Ambulance Volunteers are onsite and can be used by members of the public during the event.

Please chat to any of our volunteers if you need assistance on the night and we can make the space more comfortable and welcoming for you.
